QMT634: Some Techniques for Generating Random variates

Privacy is an increasingly important subject for organizations. Nowadays, organizations (unknowingly) process vast amounts of personal data of their customers in numerous different information systems. There are strict legislations regarding the processing of personal data, and from mid-2016, these legislations will only get more strict with the introduction of the General Data Protection Regulation in the European Union. In an approach to ensure compliance with these legislations, different techniques such Privacy Enhancing Technologies, Privacy-by-Design and Privacy Design Strategies were introduced in the past decades. However, these techniques tend to be defined in such a high-level of abstraction that they are hard to use in practice. This paper discusses and explains various software techniques which can help to design information systems that can better protect the privacy of their users. Next, these techniques are combined as a solution named Privacy Management System. This system is able to ensure and enforce full data processing transparency of an organization and should close the gap between the privacy legislations and software development.

This paper explores the relationship between ethnic fractionalization and social capital between 1990-2005. First, using data from 1990, 1997 and 2005 we test for time differences in the impact of ethnic fractionalization on social capital. Subsequently, we examine U.S. data for evidence consistent with the proposed outcomes in the conflict, contact, or hunker-down theses discussed in Putnam (2007). Putnam (2007) examines what happens to “trust" or “social capital" when individuals of different ethnicity are introduced into social, political and/or economic groups over time. Using an instrumental variable (IV) estimator, we find little evidence of heterogeneity in the impact of ethnic fractionalization on social capital over our period of analysis. In addition, using both fixed effect and IV estimators, we reject the contact hypothesis, but find evidence consistent with the outcomes predicted in both the conflict hypothesis and Putnam’s hunker-down hypothesis, in inter-ethnic relations. Due to data limitations, we are unable to test directly which of these two thesis are more relevant for the U.S experience. However, we provide suggestive evidence in support of the conflict hypothesis over the hunker-down hypothesis. Our results suggest that between 1990-2005, as communities in the U.S became more diverse, there was a tendency for social capital to decline.

Voor seminarie kregen wij de opdracht een moirépatroon op bestelling te maken. We moesten aanvankelijk het niveaulijnpatroon vinden waarvan de glanskrommen afgeronde vierkanten voorstellen. Gezien we hier vrij snel in geslaagd waren, hebben we de opdracht uitgebreid. Ons uiteindelijke doel werd het maken van vier moirépatronen, met name de vier symbolen van het kaartspel. In dit verslag staat stap voor stap uitgeschreven hoe we tot dit resultaat zijn gekomen, van functies met twee variabelen tot het uiteindelijke plotten van de moirépatronen met het computeralgebrapakket Sage.
